40/40

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”

Good evening friends! I am going to switch gears just a bit and touch on a personal goal I have been striving towards; save more/spend less and practice mindful spending.  This has been a challenging task and I truly believe that for myself, the year 2013 was over-indulgent and out of balance.  I felt myself putting forth energy, time and money that could have been devoted and spent in places that would better others; rather than just my wardrobe.  I love Instagram and all of the amazing women I have met through this social media platform. And I think it is so great that we can share fashion-finds and killer steals on items that we have all been on the hunt for! Though it is fun and the rush of finally scoring that coveted piece of jewelry is exciting; I let it take priority and lost focus of the other important things in my life! I vowed to not over-spend in January and I failed….Miserably! February approaches, and with the encouragement of Peg Hinds and many other fabulous ladies, I began the No-Spend February.  I semi-conquered this goal (I did use Christmas gift cards for the Peter Pilloto for Target launch and on AG and 7FM jeans at Von Maur) But in my defense, my youngest pup, Roger, ate my favorite pair of skinny jeans and I finally found the perfect replacement pair, so I couldn’t pass them up! Also, I purchased the bright blue satchel from Target that is a total Kate Spade dupe and the budget-fashionista in me could not walk away.  Like I said, not a total victory, but I did reign in the impulse IG shopping and that felt really good!

Now, here we are in the early days of March and I am looking to continue my progress from No-Spend February and practice mindful spending.  Creating better habits and focusing on what is a need and what is a want.  I shouldn’t buy something just because it is on the clearance rack for $10 at Target! PS, that really cute mixed-print camo and stripe tee that was on sale yesterday at Gap…. Guess who totally talked herself out of that purchase ——-> This girl! I am not committing myself to a No-Spend March because Tony and I are headed to NYC next week and I imagine I will be doing some sort of shopping.  And it is my first time visiting NYC, so I am taking suggestions on must-go places to shop (budget friendly please)!  But, once we return from our trip, I am getting back on the saddle and plan to do a No-Spend April.

In honor of Lent and my personal goal of having fewer, better things (see The Lean Closet Movement, it will change your perspective!), I am going to embark on a challenge that SouthernVogue shared on Instagram; 40 Bags in 40 Days.  During the 40 days of the Lenten season, each day I will bag up things I don’t need and donate, recycle, trash or sell them.  It does not have to be limited to just clothing items either! The purpose or goal of 40/40 is to de-clutter, minimize and rejoice in what we already have; and give to others who are in-need! So who’s with me?

I would love to hear your thoughts regarding this post and let me know if I’m not alone in trying to find the balance between being a savvy fashionista and the other important facets of life!  Thanks for reading and Happy Humpday!

xoxo, Sara
